To enroll in an individual or family health plan through the Affordable Care Act for 2024, you’ll need to do so during the annual open enrollment period currently slated for November 1st, 2023. You can still purchase health insurance if you’re experiencing a Quality of Life Event, such as getting married, divorced, a death, having a baby or losing your health care coverage.

If you’ve missed the open enrollment window, or don’t qualify as having a Quality of Life event, you may need to consider short-term plans to bridge your coverage gaps.

Whatever your need Midwest Health Insurance Solutions can help you get the coverage you need.

The New Special Enrollment Period

As of September 2021, a new Special Enrollment Period allows for year-round enrollment in Affordable Care Act plans for those whose income is below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level. You may also be eligible for a tax credit to cover the cost of a benchmark plan. You can use this SEP as often as needed.

Tax Credits & Subsidies

As of right now, tax credit eligibility for Marketplace plans has increased allowing more people to qualify for lower health insurance rates.

Like the new special enrollment period, these savings are designed to help lower income Americans, especially those making between 100-400% of the Federal Poverty level. Your household income will determine your subsidies. If your reported and actual income differ, maybe you lost your job, then we can help report that to the Marketplace so you get the best plan for you.

Some applicants will also qualify for cost-sharing reductions on their chosen health insurance, saving them money on out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, coinsurance and copayments. These savings operate on a sliding income scale.

If your estimated household income is less than 100% of the federal poverty level, you may qualify for Medicaid.

Health Insurance Quality Life Events

If you’re outside the open enrollment period and don’t qualify for a special enrollment period, you can also get covered if you’ve experienced a quality life event. The list of what counts as a life event is long — everything from marriage, divorce, death, birth, getting out of jail or prison, or turning 26 and losing your parents’ health insurance appears on the federal list.

The Exchange/Marketplace can help you get coverage and access tax credits depending on your income. You also don’t have to worry about underwriting and your premiums can be much lower.

Individual & Family Health Insurance Plans

The Affordable Care Act changed everything about buying insurance. For some that’s meant better access, and for others it’s meant smaller networks with fewer options. When working with a representative, it’s helpful to know exactly what you’re comparing to find the best plan.

Almost half of the plans sold on the federal Exchange are health maintenance organizations, or HMO’s. HMO’s have networks of providers and care patients can see, but if you go outside their network, you could be responsible for the bill.

A preferred provider organization — or PPO — allows you to work with your preferred network of providers, as long as you have a network provider.

Health Insurance Quotes Direct And Online Enrollment

While it may seem advantageous to quickly enroll in a medical coverage plan yourself, working with an agent like those at Midwest Health Insurance Solutions can make sure you’re getting the correct plan. This comes at no additional cost, but with the added benefits of comparing coverage options across providers and getting the correct plan.

If you want to buy directly from an insurance company, we can be your agent of record. Again, this has no added costs, but it allows you to see what’s available in your area, make sure you’re getting in the qualifying tax credits you deserve.
